Autumn Activities for Children: Make October an Adventure
There’s something about autumn that makes everyday adventures feel a little more exciting.
The leaves are changing, conkers are falling, the evenings are getting darker and there are new things to discover almost every time you step outside.
And for children, that means October is packed with opportunities to explore, learn, create and try something new.
The best part?
It doesn’t need to feel like a lesson.
🍂 Learning can happen anywhere
An autumn walk can become a nature investigation.
Making something in the kitchen can develop practical skills.
Planning an activity can encourage independence.
A question about why the leaves are changing can turn into an afternoon of discovery.
That’s one of the things we love about home education - learning doesn’t have to be separated from everyday life.
Sometimes the simplest experiences are the ones children remember.
Some ideas for your autumn adventures
Not sure where to start?
Here are a few simple ideas to get October going:
Go on an autumn nature hunt.
Head outside and see what signs of the changing season your child notices.
Build somewhere cosy to read.
Blankets, cushions, a favourite book and perhaps something warm to drink can completely transform an ordinary afternoon.
Let your child take the lead.
Give them responsibility for planning something the family can do together.
Try something seasonal.
Autumn brings plenty of opportunities to discover new foods, get creative and spend more time outside.
And that’s just the beginning.
The important part isn’t completing activities perfectly.
It’s giving children opportunities to make choices, try things for themselves and follow their curiosity.
🍁 That’s why we created the October Autumn Adventures Challenge
We wanted to create something families could use throughout October without turning the month into another checklist of work.
So we created the October Autumn Adventures Challenge.
Inside are 20 mini challenges designed to encourage children to explore, discover, learn and grow - with children choosing which challenges they’d like to tackle and completing them in their own time.
But the 20 challenges are only part of it.
Children also get their own Challenge Journal, where they can record and reflect on their experiences, rather than simply ticking activities off and moving on.
There’s a Challenge Tracker to follow their progress and an October Goal page where they can decide something they want to work towards.
🎒 Building independence along the way
Each monthly challenge also includes a Life Skill of the Month.
For October, children are challenged to pack their own bag.
They think about where they’re going, what they’ll be doing, what the weather will be like and what they might need - before reflecting afterwards on how they did.
It’s a simple everyday activity, but that’s exactly the point.
Learning to think ahead, make decisions and take responsibility doesn’t always need a worksheet or lesson.
🔎 Follow their curiosity
October also includes an Explorer Challenge and Curiosity Challenge.
The Curiosity Challenge starts with something incredibly simple:
“I wonder…”
The child chooses something they want to know more about, decides how they might find the answer and records what they discover.
There’s no predetermined topic.
Their curiosity leads the learning.
⭐️ And then there are the Bigger Challenges…
Alongside the 20 mini challenges are three Bigger Challenges designed to turn an activity into something the family can really remember.
We’re not going to spoil those here.
You’ll have to discover them inside the pack. 😉
Make this October one to remember
You don’t need to plan something spectacular every day.
Sometimes it’s simply about giving children the opportunity to explore somewhere new, learn a practical skill, ask a question or take responsibility for something themselves.
That’s what Autumn Adventures is all about.
20 mini challenges.
A monthly life skill.
Additional Explorer and Curiosity Challenges.
Three Bigger Challenges.
Journal pages.
Goal setting.
Challenge tracker.
And a certificate to celebrate completing the challenge.
All wrapped into one October adventure.
The pack culminates in an Autumn Adventures completion certificate, giving children something to celebrate at the end of the month and add to their collection of monthly challenge badges that run throughout the school year (September - July).
